Major Berlin Nightclubs Under Threat From New Roadway Construction

Published at

A continued expansion of a roadway in Berlin could potentially shut down several nightclubs, nightlife hotspots, and cultural centers in the region.

The Bundesautobahn 100, also known as the A100, looks to run through nightlife areas in Mitte, Charlottenburg, Tempelhof, and Neukölln and has been underway since 2013.

If went ahead as planned, the construction could wipe out 21 cultural institutions including venues like ://about blank, Club OST, and Wilde Renate.

But there is a lose-lose situation with the new construction as without the expanded roadway, landlords can be expected to try and build residential or office buildings in the area.

There are also other properties across the Spree River that could be affected by development in the “Lohmühle,” an area that hosts venues like ÆDEN, Birgit, and Club der Visonäre, but a cement factory taking over the space means these plans have been stalled.

Many of these clubs are a large part of Berlin’s €1.5 billion annual club tourism revenue that, in 2018, brought in three million tourists to the area.

Dance demonstrations took place all across Berlin on May 6 to boycott the motorway plans and preserve the free space.
