Daft Punk have now shared the fifth episode of their Memory Tapes YouTube series; this time featuring an interview with UK garage icon Todd Edwards and in-studio archival footage during the recording of “Fragments of Time,” on which Edwards was a featured artist.
In the new episode, which debuted on September 6, Edwards also discusses his work on Daft Punk’s “Face to Face” from their 2001 album Discovery, and even shares details on the group’s decision to split in 2021.
Edwards goes on to tell a unique story of how he took a hiatus from music in the late ‘00s and was “dying inside a little each day” while working a customer service job, before being called in to work on Daft Punk’s fourth and final album Random Access Memories.
Edwards also provides an insider opinion that at the time of their breakup, Daft Punk were “already going in different directions” musically.
“Guy-Man seems to be drawn more to the hip-hop realm and Thomas was also a director. It kind of felt like they weren’t on the same page anymore, anyway, so I wasn’t shocked,” he said.
Edwards continued, “I think the fact that it was so devastating to people shows that there needs to be more Daft Punks out there. If anything it should inspire people to be more creative and take chances.”
As part of a continued 10th anniversary celebration for Random Access Memories, the Memory Tapes documentary series will include a total of eight episodes and has already featured The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, pianist Chilly Gonzales, and more.
