Berlin is investing in nightlife with a €947 million culture fund to go towards adding 500 new clubs, venues, and spaces across the city.
The initiative is part of a project from Joe Chialo, the State Minister for Culture and Social Cohesion, who raised the project total this year by €13 million in support of Berlin’s rich nighttime culture.
Chialo was previously the frontman of a heavy metal band before moving into politics, giving him plenty of experience in the cultural scene of Berlin.
He hopes to have a €1 billion budget by 2025.
Funds will be used to add clubs, venues, theaters, and museums to Berlin’s current 2,000 cultural venues in the hopes of doubling the number of state-owned spaces by 2030.
Many of Berlin’s prominent nightclubs are currently in jeopardy as a major highway, The Bundesautobahn 100, is being constructed to run through nightlife areas in Mitte, Charlottenburg, Tempelhof, and Neukölln.
Berlin’s economy is largely influenced by club tourism, bringing in over €1.5 billion annually.
The new €947 million culture fund is expected to be distributed throughout the city in 2024.
